Environmental Soil Chemistry (PLSC/CHEM 608)

This course covers the principles governing chemical reactions in soils, including the structure and properties of inorganic and organic soil components, soil solution–solid phase equilibria, sorption phenomena, ion exchange, chemical kinetics, redox chemistry, and soil acidity and salinity. Students develop skills in applying thermodynamic and kinetic frameworks to understand contaminant fate, nutrient cycling, and soil remediation. Coursework includes problem sets, a mid-term exam, and a case study analyzing a real-world soil chemistry problem.

Field Methods in Soil, Water, Air (PLSC 640)

This hands-on course trains students in field and laboratory methods for environmental sampling and analysis. Topics include soil collection and characterization, water quality sampling, air monitoring, quality assurance and quality control protocols, and data processing techniques. Students gain practical experience through field trips to sites including agricultural research farms, riparian corridors, and botanical gardens. Assessment is based on participation, summary questions, homework assignments, a synthesis activity, and a final presentation.
